COLUMBUS- Roller blades, lap top computers, skis, garbage cans, cell phones - What do these things have in common? All items are partially or fully made with plastic.

Because more and more companies are creating and using plastic, the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) announced a safety class specifically designed for the plastics industry.

“Each and every occupation has different risks and dangers,” said James Conrad, BWC administrator/CEO. “By becoming aware of specific safety practices needed in the plastics industry, an employer can proactively protect their employees from harm.”

The Safety for Plastics class will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 6 at the Garfield Heights Service Office.

BWC has geared the curriculum toward plastic company owners, managers, supervisors, safety coordinators, safety committee members, front line supervisors and industrial engineers. Attendees will learn:

--Processes to support safe and healthy work environments in the plastics industry;
--Importance of a safety culture in the workplace;
--Hazard recognition tools to identify problems and promote self-sufficiency;
--Recognition of ergonomic issues, options for solving ergonomic problems in the plastics industry;
--Strategies and solutions for solving health and safety problems; --Cost justification;
--Resources to support safe and healthy workplaces in the plastics industry.
